157 Group welcomes the appointment of Frank McLoughlin as chair of the independent commission on adult education and vocational pedagogy
---BEGINS---
The 157 Group welcomes the appointment by Minister John Hayes of Frank McLoughlin CBE as chair of the independent commission on adult education and vocational pedagogy. This commission offers the opportunity for a seminal piece of work to develop robust, coherent and innovative pedagogy for outstanding teaching and learning in the further education and skills sector.
Lynne Sedgmore CBE, executive director of the 157 Group said; "This is a timely and crucial commission to develop an enhanced pedagogy for adult vocational education. Effective teaching and learning is a vital element in enabling the FE and skills sector to flourish and 157 Group is keen to contribute to the commission's work in any way it can. We are focussing hard on Leading Learning with an Institute of Education seminar with Professor Lorna Unwin and our think piece on "Leading learning in further education" which identifies clear actions to encourage excellence and improvements in teaching and learning."
Marilyn Hawkins, chair of the 157 Group and principal of Barnet and Southgate College said; "Frank was an outstanding chair for the 157 Group as my predecessor and we have no doubts that his wealth of experience as principal of City and Islington College and as a practitioner fully grounded in teaching and learning will contribute significantly to this important work. We need to continue to deliver world class teaching and learning as well as to reinforce the important role that vocational qualifications play in equipping our learners with the skills they need to progress in life."

The commission was announced by the government on 1 December 2011 in a formal response to its New Challenges, New Chances consultation, "Further Education and Skills System Reform Plan: Building a World Class Skills System". Final findings and recommendations of the commission, which is being supported by the Institute for Learning (IfL), the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), are due to be published in spring 2013.
---About the 157 Group---
The 157 Group represents 27 of the most influential colleges in the FE sector. It was formed in 2006 in response to paragraph 157 of Sir Andrew Foster's report on the future of further education colleges, in which he argued that principals of large successful colleges should play a greater role in policymaking.
