Stoke on Trent College has developed a “Stoke Approach” to teaching, learning and assessment, which was commended by Ofsted at the College’s recent Inspection. The approach is designed to promote employability and to enable staff to plan learning around the Common Inspection framework. The approach demonstrates a clear line of sight from the Strategic Plan to the Teaching and Learning Strategy to the lesson plans, the observation scheme and an extensive CPD programme.
The Stoke Approach has 10 aspects which are those things that would “typically” be seen in a Stoke on Trent learning session. Governors are able to see an overall evaluation against these aspects in a RAG rated document (see attached). The evaluation is informed by observations, learning walks and student voice. It enables Governors to “take the pulse” of the quality of teaching and learning at the College, and to challenge managers on areas needing improvement. It enables Governors to be aware of the success of the College’s Teaching and Learning Strategy and to know what typically they should expect to see when undertaking learning walks or holding discussions with Link Managers.
So far the College has used this evaluation as part of self-assessment, but is now incorporating it into the Governors “dashboard” which will give Governors an ongoing view of the quality of teaching learning and assessment in the College in a clear, simple and visual way.
