18th January 2010
The 157 Group today congratulates Denise Brown- Sackey on her appointment as to Principal and Chief Executive of Newham College. Denise formally takes up post on the 19th of April when the current Principal Martin Tolhurst steps down.
Lynne Sedgmore Executive Director of the 157 Group said:
"I pass my heartiest congratulations to Denise upon her appointment. Newham College is an outstanding provider of further education and Denise has already played a major role in its success in her current role of Vice Principal."
Sedgmore added:
"The 157 Group as a whole will be looking forward to welcoming Denise into the fold in her new role and I am confident she will add an extra dimension to our discussions and debates. It is worth noting that Denise will be only the second BME Principal in our capital city, following closely to the appointment of Maxine Room at Lewisham"
Frank McLoughlin Chair of the 157 Group said:
"I am delighted to welcome Denise into the Principals membership of the 157 Group. I would also like to take this opportunity to pay testament to the contribution that Martin Tolhurst has made to both his own college and our own group. Martin has been an invaluable member of 157 and as the current chair I thank him for his contribution and commitment."

Notes to editors:
- The 157 group represents 28 of the most influential Colleges in the FE sector.
- It was formed in 2006 in response to paragraph 157 of Sir Andrew Foster's report on the future of further education colleges in which he argued that principals of large successful colleges should play a greater role in policymaking.
